Harbo enlisted in May of 1943 and was assigned to the 132nd Infantry Regiment of the Americal Division. He served in the Pacific and received the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with Bronze Star, the Philippine Liberation Medal with Bronze Star, the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He finished his military obligations with the Army Reserves in 1953.
