As the oldest sibling in a family with 12 children, Toshiko left camp and went to work in Chicago. Much of the money she earned was sent back to help the family who remained in the camp. She married Yoshio Katayama while living in Chicago and following the war, she lived on Bainbridge Island where the Katayama family resided. She and Yoshio moved to Seattle in 1956 with their two children and lived in Seattle until her death in 2006.
