Born in 1940, in Seattle, to Kiyomitsu and Toshiko Yakushijin. Graduated from Franklin High School in 1958, and attended the University of Washington, majoring in foreign language and education. Taught at Thompson Junior High School and Roosevelt High School in Seattle for over 30 years, teaching Spanish, French and Japanese.
